National Maritime Day (India)

National Maritime Day is celebrated annually on April 5th to commemorate the historic voyage of the SS Loyalty in 1919. Operated by the Scindia Steam Navigation Company, this ship was the first Indian ship to sail from Mumbai to London, marking a significant step towards India’s maritime independence during British colonial rule. The SS Loyalty’s voyage was more than just a physical voyage from one port to another; it represented India’s aspirations for economic power and global connectivity. It laid the foundation for India’s emergence as a key maritime player, shaping trade routes, fostering international relations and fostering economic growth. This event symbolized India’s determination to maintain a presence in global maritime trade. To commemorate this milestone, National Maritime Day was officially declared on April 5, 1964.
