16 September
Martyrs’ Day in Libya is observed on 16 September. It honours Libyans who lost their lives or were exiled during Italian colonial rule, as well as those remembered in later struggles, including the 17 February Revolution. The date is associated with the execution of resistance leader Omar Mukhtar in 1931 and is marked through remembrance, visits to memorials and reflection on sacrifice and national history.
Event Suggestions:
• Creating a respectful display about Libyan history, remembrance and national identity
• Learning about Omar Mukhtar and anti-colonial resistance with careful context
• Hosting a quiet reflection on sacrifice, memory and community resilience
