25 August
Australian South Sea Islanders National Recognition Day honours Australian South Sea Islander peoples and their history, resilience and cultural identity. It recognises the legacy of people brought to Australia from the Pacific Islands, many through coercive labour practices, and their contributions to Queensland, northern New South Wales and wider Australian society. The day is often marked through flag-raising, remembrance and community events.
Event Suggestions:
• Creating a display about Australian South Sea Islander history, identity and resilience
• Sharing oral histories, music or cultural traditions with community-led context
• Reflecting on recognition, labour history and the importance of cultural continuity
