World Listening Day

World Listening Day is celebrated each year on July 18 to commemorate the birthday of its founder, Canadian composer and pioneer of acoustic ecology Raymond Murray Schafer. This day encourages people to listen carefully to the sounds around them and reflect on their relationship with place, community and the environment. It promotes soundscape awareness and invites people to notice the natural, urban and cultural sounds that often go unheard. The day supports deeper attention, environmental awareness and respectful listening as a shared practice.

Event Suggestions:
• Taking part in a guided soundwalk to explore natural and urban soundscapes
• Recording and sharing community sound memories through a collaborative listening activity
• Practising mindful listening through quiet reflection and discussions about place and belonging
