St. George’s Caye Day

St. George’s Caye Day is observed in Belize on 10 September. It commemorates the 1798 Battle of St. George’s Caye, in which British settlers and enslaved and free people of African descent resisted Spanish forces. The day is connected with Belizean history, national identity and the wider September celebrations leading toward Independence Day.

Event Suggestions:
• Creating a timeline about the Battle of St. George’s Caye and Belizean history
• Sharing Belizean music, food, stories or cultural traditions with context
• Hosting a discussion on identity, resistance and public memory
