19 August
Janai Purnima is a Hindu festival observed in Nepal and some neighbouring communities during the full moon of Shrawan. Many Hindu men renew the sacred thread, known as janai, while others receive protective threads from priests or family elders. The day may also include temple visits, family gatherings and the eating of kwati, a mixed bean soup.
Event Suggestions:
• Learning about the meaning of janai, protective threads and full moon rituals
• Sharing kwati or exploring Nepalese festival foods with cultural context
• Creating a display about Nepalese Hindu traditions and family blessings
