International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination commemorates the 1960 Sharpeville massacre in South Africa, when police opened fire on a peaceful protest against apartheid pass laws. Proclaimed by the United Nations in 1966, the day calls on communities to challenge racism, promote equality and take action against racial discrimination in all forms.

Event Suggestions:
• Facilitate a respectful discussion about racism, equality and allyship
• Create an anti-racism pledge or classroom display
• Explore stories of people and movements working for racial justice
