26 January

Australia Day / Invasion Day / Survival Day / Day of Mourning

26 January is Australia’s national public holiday, commonly known as Australia Day, and marks the 1788 landing of the First Fleet at Warrane, now Sydney Cove. For many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and allies, the date is also observed as Invasion Day, Survival Day, or Day of Mourning, recognising the ongoing impacts of colonisation and the survival of First Nations cultures. The day is therefore a time for celebration for some, and reflection, truth-telling, mourning, and advocacy for others.

Event Suggestions:
• Centre First Nations voices through respectful resources, stories, or guest speakers
• Discuss the different meanings of Australia Day, Invasion Day, Survival Day, and Day of Mourning
• Create a reflection activity on truth-telling, sovereignty, culture, and reconciliation
