02 February
Groundhog Day is a North American tradition with roots in older European weather folklore, including German customs connected to animal behaviour and seasonal prediction. The day is based on the belief that a groundhog seeing its shadow means winter will continue for several more weeks, while no shadow suggests an early spring. Although not scientific, the tradition remains a popular cultural celebration of folklore, seasonal change, humour, and community identity.
Event Suggestions:
• Compare Groundhog Day with other weather folklore and seasonal traditions
• Create a display about winter, spring, animal symbolism, and community customs
• Discuss how folklore and popular culture keep local traditions alive
