Street Children’s Day is held annually on January 31st. It was established by the Austrian aid organisation “Youth One World” (Jugend Eine Welt) which draws attention to the ongoing suffering of the street children all over the world. The mission of the day is to promote development and education for street children. It also aims to raise awareness in Austria to encourage young people to volunteer. Other activities include collecting donations and contributions for education, development and emergency relief projects. According to UNICEF, there are 100 million street children worldwide. In Austria, there are approximately 500 children without a permanent roof over their heads. Homelessness, hunger and violence are all experienced by street children.
