Errol Barrow Day (Barbados)

Errol Barrow Day celebrates the birthday of Errol Barrow, the first Prime Minister of Barbados annually on January 21st. Barrow played a critical role in the country’s transition to independence from British rule in 1966. Celebrated in a country with a rich history of European colonisation and a predominantly African population, this day offers a time to reflect on national identity and progress. The commemoration draws on Barbados’ colonial past, addressing themes of independence and self-determination, while also recognising Barrow’s contributions to the country’s socio-economic landscape. The capital, Bridgetown, remains a focal point as the largest city as well as cultural hub, where a variety of events can be held to honour his legacy and the national achievements.

Event suggestions:
• Creating heritage displays honouring civic resilience and identity
• Listening to songs and stories tied to public remembrance
• Mapping Errol Barrow history through artefacts, timelines, and dialogue
