23 August
The International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition is observed on 23 August and was designated by UNESCO. The date recalls the uprising in Saint-Domingue, now Haiti, that began on the night of 22 to 23 August 1791 and became a turning point in the struggle against the transatlantic slave trade. The day encourages remembrance, education and reflection on freedom, resistance and human dignity.
Event Suggestions:
• Creating a reflective display about the transatlantic slave trade, resistance and abolition
• Exploring Haitian history and the Saint-Domingue uprising through maps and timelines
• Hosting a respectful discussion on memory, freedom and human dignity
