15 September

Costa Rica Independence Day

Costa Rica Independence Day is observed on 15 September, commemorating the 1821 independence of Central America from Spain. In Costa Rica, celebrations often begin the evening before with the symbolic freedom torch and children’s faroles lantern parades. The day itself may include flags, civic ceremonies, school parades, music and the singing of the national anthem.

Event Suggestions:
• Creating faroles-inspired lanterns while learning about Costa Rican independence traditions
• Sharing Costa Rican music, food, stories or national symbols with cultural context
• Exploring the shared 1821 independence of Central American countries
