06 February
Sámi National Day marks the first Sámi congress held in Trondheim, Norway, in 1917, when Northern and Southern Sámi representatives gathered to discuss shared concerns and rights. The day is observed across Sápmi, the traditional homeland of the Sámi people across northern Norway, Sweden, Finland, and northwestern Russia. It celebrates Sámi identity, language, culture, self-determination, and Indigenous resilience.
Event Suggestions:
• Explore Sámi culture through language, joik music, duodji craft, or traditional clothing
• Create a map of Sápmi and discuss Indigenous identity across national borders
• Learn about Sámi history, rights, and contemporary cultural expression
