17 February
Independence Day in Kosovo commemorates Kosovo’s declaration of independence from Serbia on 17 February 2008. The day is celebrated by many Kosovars through parades, speeches, concerts, flags, and public gatherings. Kosovo’s international status remains politically complex, so the observance also provides an opportunity to learn about self-determination, recognition, identity, and contemporary European history.
Event Suggestions:
• Create a timeline about Kosovo’s declaration of independence and contemporary history
• Explore Kosovar culture through music, food, geography, language, or national symbols
• Discuss self-determination, recognition, and the complexities of national identity
