01 June
Madaraka Day is a national holiday in Kenya that commemorates 1 June 1963, when the country attained internal self-governance from British colonial rule. “Madaraka” means “self-governance” in Swahili. The day honours Kenya’s journey towards independence, which was fully achieved on 12 December 1963 and later celebrated through Jamhuri Day.
